What is the Local Offer for Wakefield SEND?
It provides information and support available for families with children and young people aged 0-25 years with special educational needs and/or disabilities. For further information on the local offer, please click on the link below:
North Featherstone Junior and Infant School's Contribution to The Local Offer:
At North Featherstone J&I School (NFJI), we provide teaching and learning which enables all children to gain access to a broad, balanced and appropriately differentiated curriculum. We strongly believe in the role of Quality First Teaching and Curriculum Entitlement for all children.
Our aim is to ensure all children are supported in order that they may work confidently towards reaching their full potential. The Principles of the SEND Code of Practice (2015) sets out the following guidance:
- A child with special educational needs should have their educational needs met
- The views of the child should be sought and taken into account during any decision making
- The early identification of children’s needs and intervention to be put into place to support them
- A greater choice and control for young people and parent’s support
- Collaboration between Education Health and Social Care services to provide support
- High quality provision to meet the needs of children with SEND
- Become confident young children with a growing ability to communicate their own views and ready to make the transition into compulsory education
- To become confident individuals living fulfilling lives
At NFJI we pay close regard to the key principles of inclusive education:
- Setting suitable learning challenges
- Responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs
- Overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils
- NFJI is an inclusive school and offers the following range of provision to support children with SEND:
Wave 1 - Wave 1 (Universal): describes quality inclusive teaching which takes into account the learning needs of all the children in the classroom. This includes providing differentiated work and creating an inclusive learning environment.
Wave 2 - Wave 2 (Targeted): describes specific, additional and time-limited interventions provided for some children who need help to accelerate their progress to enable them to work at or above age-related expectations. Wave 2 interventions are often targeted at a group of pupils with similar needs.
Wave 3 - Wave 3 (Specialist): describes targeted provision for a minority of children where it is necessary to provide highly tailored intervention to accelerate progress or enable children to achieve their potential. This may include specialist interventions.
At NFJI, we have a team of experienced Teachers and Teaching Support Assistants (TSAs) who plan and delivery a range of interventions to meet our Wave 3 need. See below for some of them!
NFJIs Big Red Bus
After almost a year of planning, we officially opened our new double decker bus, our classroom on wheels, in September 2022, with the help if a few Featherstone Rovers rugby stars! This unique extension to our learning environment has created a lot of interest and will support children's learning, especially those with special educational needs.
Baking and Cooking
Children read cooking recipes and bake and cook together. In the Spring term, we plan to plant fruits and vegetables in our allotment area and then cook with our very own produce. Children have worked together to write a shopping list and walk to the local shop to buy ingredients for baking sessions. Thes are skills that will be with them for life!
Musical Interaction
Musical interaction is an intervention to aid turn taking and social interaction, speech and communication using music. The children absolutely love it!
Gardening
Our children are in charge of keeping our allotment tidy and productive. Throughout the year they grow, weed, sow and harvest the area. They work exceptionally hard together as a team!
Forest Schools
Oak Forest Schools have worked with our children every week during Autumn 2! They provide an extensive outdoor curriculum of activities, just look at the fun they have had so far!!
WESAIL
Wakefield Early Support, Advice, Information and Liaison (WESAIL) provides a free, confidential and impartial service.
The aim of the WESAIL service is to support children, young people, their parents, carers and families by providing information to navigate systems and processes so that they can play an active role in decision making about matters relating to their or their children’s health, education, social care to support and empower them in meeting their child’s needs and promoting self-advocacy.
WESAIL is also responsible for updating the Local Offer and engaging with children, young people, families and stakeholders in its ongoing development and review. The aim of the local Offer is to help people easily find information about the services, activities and support available in the local area for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and /or Disabilities and their families.
